About me

Glasgow based printed fashion designer Hilary Laing creates beautiful garments and accessories with delightful prints that are very cheerful and colourful.

'My work is very much a personal response to children and their outlook on life through their use of colour and mark making techniques. I want people to enjoy wearing my colourful quirky pieces and the main aim is to make people smile inside.'

A graduate of the School of Textiles, Heriot Watt University, Galashiels, Hilary went off to work in London for Elspeth Gibson. Having gained and experienced the innermost workings of various companies in the fashion industry Hilary saw the opportunity to update and enhance her knowledge of textile techniques by undertaking an MSC in CAD for Texile Designers at Huddersfield University. This course brought new fresh ideas which were to be the basis for what is her inspiration to date.

The inspiration for the majority of her work stems from children. Their outlook on life on various levels she feels to be fresh and exciting. Hilary believes we grow up far too quickly and forget those precious moments we had. Hilary's expressive mark making techniques and her use of colour create a wonderful array of designs to mesmerize you.

Hilary's intriguing, vibrant, lively designs are all hand printed and produced in Scotland.

'Hilary Laing's work makes you smile. You look at the tangle of brightly coloured hand drawn lines and they make you feel warm inside.'
Lindsay Lees, Fashion Editor, Borne Magazine

'And smile inside you do! Colourful crayon scribbles on simple-to-wear A-line dresses instantly transport you to happy summer days. If you ever have the pleasure of meeting the cheery Hilary you'll completely 'get' these designs.'
